Winter Activities in Lapland — A Guide to the Best Experiences

Winter in Lapland lasts from October to May, and there are an incredible number of activities on offer during this time. Whether it’s your first or tenth trip to Lapland, this guide will give you tips to help you get the most out of your winter holiday.
Snowmobiling
Snowmobiling is one of the most popular activities in Lapland. Safaris are organised at all ski resorts and typically last from two hours to a full day. Shorter trips are suitable for first-time visitors, while longer safaris take you deep into the wilderness.
A valid driving licence (category B) is required to drive a snowmobile. Most safaris are run in pairs, but you can usually drive alone for an additional fee. Prices range from 80 euros to over 200 euros, depending on the length of the trip. Equipment — warm overalls, helmet and gloves — is always included in the price.
The most popular snowmobiling destinations are Levi, Ruka and Saariselkä. In Levi and Ruka, the trail networks are extensive, and safaris take place in fell and forest landscapes. In Saariselkä, driving takes place in the wilderness, and trips often head towards Urho Kekkonen National Park.
Husky safaris
For many, a husky sled ride is the highlight of a trip to Lapland. Sliding on a dog sled through the silent winter landscape is an unforgettable experience. Safaris range from short 2-kilometer rides to several-hour wilderness trips.
Husky farms also offer you the opportunity to get to know the dogs and learn about their training. Many farms also offer kennel visits, where you can cuddle puppies and hear about the story of huskies as arctic working dogs. Prices start at around 60 euros for short rides.
Husky safaris are organized in all Lapland destinations. There are particularly well-known husky farms in Levi, Ruka and Rovaniemi. Book a safari in advance, as the most popular dates sell out quickly.
Reindeer safari
A reindeer safari is a traditional Lappish experience. Sitting in a sleigh pulled by a reindeer and looking at the snowy landscape is a peaceful experience that is suitable for all ages. Many reindeer safaris also include a visit to a reindeer farm, where you can learn about reindeer herding traditions and Sámi culture.
Reindeer safaris are organized all over Lapland. In Rovaniemi, there are several reindeer farms near Santa Claus Village, and in ski resorts, tours usually go to nearby forests. Prices start at around 50 euros.
Northern Lights Safaris
The Northern Lights are one of Lapland’s biggest draws. The best time to see them is from September to March, and the best conditions are on cloudless, dark nights. Although you can see the Northern Lights on your own, a guided safari significantly increases your chances — guides know the best viewing spots and track activity data.
Northern Lights safaris are organized by snowmobile, snowshoe or bus. Many safaris also include a campfire with warm drinks. Prices range from 60 to 150 euros.
Saariselkä and Ruka are the best destinations for viewing the Northern Lights due to their low light pollution. Levi also hosts many Northern Lights safaris, and the summit of the fell offers unobstructed views of the sky.
Snowshoeing
Snowshoeing is an easy way to explore Lapland’s winter nature. Snowshoeing is possible even in deep snow, and the tours are suitable for all levels of hikers. Guided tours usually last 2–4 hours and include snowshoe rental.
Particularly popular snowshoeing areas include Pyhä-Luosto National Park, Oulanka National Park near Ruka, and the Pallastunturi area near Ylläs. Snowshoeing is also an affordable activity — prices start at around 40 euros for guided tours.
